Pozzuoli is a city steeped in history, where the footprints of emperors, gladiators and mythological heroes are well evidenced by the Roman and medieval architectural splendor that still lingers. Prominent among these attractions is the Flavian Amphitheatre, the third largest structure of its kind in Italy, where grotesque spectacles and bloody fights once abounded. Any visit to Puteola must necessarily pass by the Solfatara: the most famous sulfurous area in southern Italy, an active volcanic crater on the Campi Flegrei, anciently nicknamed the ‘Gates of Hell’. There you can admire fumaroles, mud pools and mineral deposits, a window into powerful underground geothermal activity that is still very present.

The beach on the Phlegraean coast also boasts a history stretching back thousands of years. Since the times of the Roman Empire, when it was popular as a refuge for patricians who wanted to momentarily abandon the chaotic life of Rome. Even today, the charm of those beaches magnetically attracts visitors to its shimmering waters reflected on immense stretches of sand. All this, enhanced by a splendid view of the most beautiful Gulf in the world, that of Naples.

The Phlegrean Peninsula also boasts the towns of Bacoli, Monte di Procida and Miseno, other precious pearls full of history and places of interest, all in less than half an hour’s drive from Pozzuoli. In these areas you will find the stupendous Aragonese castle in Baia, as well as the famous ‘Casina Vanvitelliana’ in Bacoli. A very elegant, almost fairy-tale lake house that is also one of the most important and best maintained buildings of the 18th century. Its astonishing peculiarity has made it the set of numerous film productions, including, for example, Pinocchio, as well as a regular destination for a variety of photo shoots for the most diverse occasions.

Originally created at the end of the 18th century by architect Carlo Vanvitelli, as the Bourbons’ hunting and fishing reserve. Over the years, it has hosted prominent figures such as princes and kings, musicians and artists, and even Luigi Einaudi, who was the second President of the Italian Republic.

As far as the road system is concerned, the Phlegraean area can get very busy, especially at certain times of the evening, but is otherwise very pleasant to drive through, thanks also to its enchanting views and roads. There are four access points to enter Pozzuoli’s restricted traffic zones: the first, in Corso Umberto I at No. 165; the second, still in Corso Umberto I but at the crossroads with Via Travail; the third in Via Scialoja, in the harbour area near Largo Emporio; and finally Porta Napoli. Restrictions in these areas always apply. The access points to the ZTL on the seafront (brown sector) have also recently been opened: this includes Corso Umberto and the inner side streets up to Via Travai.
